Prof. Kumar Molugaram, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University has received the ACE Award 2025 under the Higher Education Institutions Category. By bestowing this award, the International Council for Circular Economy (IC-CE) has recognized the University for promoting circular economy via the OU-Mahalaxmi Biogas Plant. This Biogas Plant has been established in Ladies Hostel Complex of the University in collaboration with SASHAS NGO, through the support of KPMG, India. The Centre has played a critical role in establishing the Biogas Plant on campus to convert organic waste in to biogas thus reducing wastage.  

6-5 July, 2025

A monsoon birding session was conducted by CBCS as part of the Hyderabad Bird Atlas, in the campus of Osmania University. The session was led by Prof. C. Srinivasulu, Director of CBCS. Several enthusiastic birders participated in the walk and successfully identified 44 species of birds together. Another birding session was also conducted in Uppal.

The Centre organized a community awareness session on bats, followed by a bat walk. The session included insights of bat behaviour, their echolocation calls and a demonstration on the use of bat detectors. On the night walk around the campus through Oxygen Park, participants were guided and successfully identified seven species of bats.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, a plantation program was conducted around the CBCS campus. Led by Prof. C. Srinivasulu, Director of CBCS, the staff of CBCS and the members of the Osmania Biodiversity Club  participated.

21 May, 2025

On the occasion of Biodiversity Day, a snake awareness poster was released by Prof. Kumar Molugaram, Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University along with Prof. C. Srinivasulu, Director of CBCS and other imminent professors. The poster presented information on the common venomous snakes found in Peninsular India and the first aid steps to be taken for snakebites.

The first e-vehicle was dedicated to the service of the OU-Mahalaxmi Biogas Plant by Prof. Kumar Molugaram, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. G. Naresh Reddy, Registrar, Prof. S. Jithender Naik, OSD to VC, Prof. R. Rajashekar Reddy, Director, Infrastructure, Prof. C. Srinivasulu, Director, CBCS and other administrative officers of the university.

The closing ceremony of the first season of Hyderabad Bird Atlas was conducted to celebrate the contributions of all enthusiastic birders and experts who participated in this first ever endeavour in Hyderabad city. Prof. C. Srinivasulu, Director of CBCS and Dr. Bhargavi Srinivasulu also participated in the survey and were recognized for their contributions to the survey. 

20-22 February, 2025

The National Youth Biodiversity Conference for the year 2025 was hosted by the Telangana Biodiversity Board. It was held at Kanha Shanti Vanam, Ranga Reddy and was attended by 70 postgraduate students from across India. Packed with hands-on activities and exhaustive sessions, the conference engaged the participants on biodiversity conservation issues, benefit-sharing, law and policy and sustainable development. Prof. C. Srinivasulu, Director of CBCS was a speaker on the 2nd day of NYBC, engaging the audience on bats and their ecological importance. He also interacted with the participants and mentored them on biodiversity conservation.

As a part of the Hyderabad Bird Atlas surveys, CBCS conducted a winter birding session along with enthusiastic participants, volunteers and the members of the Osmania Biodiversity Club.

Prof. C. Srinivasulu, Director of CBCS and Dr. V. Bhaskar Reddy, Joint-Director of CBCS facilitated the relaunch of the Osmania Biodiversity Club, in the presence of Prof. Kumar Molugaram, Vice-Chancellor, O.U and other imminent professors. The relaunch encouraged interested students of the university, irrespective of departments, to join the club, learn and participate in its activities.

The Mahalaxmi Biogas Plant of Osmania University was inaugurated by Prof. Kumar Molugaram, Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University in the presence of Prof. G.  Naresh Reddy, Registrar, Prof. S. Jithender Kumar Naik, OSD to VC,  and Prof. C. Srinivasulu, Director of CBCS. Dr. Kalyana Lakshmi, Director, Ladies Hostel, Dr. K. Srinivas, Chief Warden, Mr. Devand Bhandari, CSR Partner, KPMG, Mr. Rajbir Singh, Director of SAAHAS NGO, and Mr. Devender Ahuja, Managing Director of Ahuja Engineering Services were also present.

As the part of the new initiative towards converting organic and food waste into the biogas for use at kitchens in Women’s Hostel Complex, a new Biogas Plant is being established under the CSR initiative through the Centre. Director of CBCS, Prof. C. Srinivasulu inaugurated the biogas stoves.

The Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Studies received its new building on 22nd May 2025. The building was inaugurated by Prof. D. Ravinder, Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University, in the presence of Prof. C. Srinivasulu, Director of CBCS and other administrative officers, marking a significant milestone for CBCS.

An essay writing competition was organized by the Centre on the theme ‘I’m part of the solution’ to address and identify the role of every citizen towards conservation of biodiversity. Many participants from various UG and PG colleges across Telangana sent in their entries and around 225 essays were received, out of which the best three were chosen.

14 March, 2021

A Bird Walk was conducted in collaboration with Hyderabad Birding Pals to document the bird diversity in the Osmania University campus. Around 60 participants belonging to various backgrounds from software engineers, academicians, homemakers, students to young children took part in this bird walk. The day witnessed six different groups who each surveyed a set area of the campus, photographed, and documented their bird observations. The Bird Walk started at 6.00 AM and progressed up until 11.00 AM in the morning during which about 78 species of birds were documented.

2– 8 October, 2020

As a part of the National Wildlife Week, 2020, celebrations, CBCS organized a series of six online talks by eminent persons from various organizations. More than 40 participants registered for the online series covering various topics and subject areas of biodiversity conservation. Speakers included Mr. Avinash Vishwanath, Ms. Farida Tampal, Mr. Sriram Reddy, Mr. Ravikanth Mancheriyala, Mr. Imran Siddiqui, and Dr. Chelmala Srinivasulu. The video lectures are available on the CBCS YouTube channel.

5 May, 2020

CBCS organized an online awareness campaign by creating posters in 12 different languages to generate public awareness that bats do not directly cause COVID – 19 and are not the culprits for the ongoing pandemic.

13 – 17 January, 2020

The workshop was conducted in collaboration with the School of Biological Sciences, University of Bristol, UK. Participants learned new techniques about the identification, ecology, statistics, phylogenetics, and conservation of bats. Resource persons for the workshop included Dr. Chelmala Srinivasulu, Dr. Bhargavi Srinivasulu, Dr. Harpreet Kaur, Mr. Aditya Srinivasulu, Prof. Gareth Jones, Dr. Matt Zeale, and Dr. Lia Gilmour.

A tree plantation program was in the Central facilities for Research and development (CFRD) premises in Osmania University Campus. A total of 80 saplings of native trees were planted.

This workshop (Training Workshop on Mobile GIS for Field Data Collection and Mapping in Biodiversity Conservation) was conducted to make participants learn ways of documenting biodiversity in their vicinity by recording observation on their mobile phones, using apps and websites like iNaturalist.
