Research Projects

Following the successful establishment of the Kolar Leaf-Nosed Bat Conservation Reserve, the Centre secured a partnership with Bat Conservation International, USA and was awarded the Endangered Species Grant to further study and understand the enigmatic and endangered Kolar Leaf-Nosed Bat (Hipposideros hypophyllus).

With this the research team at CBCS headed by Dr. Bhargavi, took up an e-DNA diet analysis of Hipposideros hypophyllus and its congenersH. durgadasi, H. fulvus and H. speoris. It involved analysing the feacal pellets of the species, presenting a non-invasive technique of diet analysis. The study found all four bat species to be diet specialists, with no overlaps in their diet requirements. It was also observed that these species consumed insect pests like Tuta absoluta (an invasive tomato crop pest), solidifying their indispensable role as biological pest control agents.
